Today’s post is by St. Clair College Journalism student, Jennifer McMullan.
Jennifer has been attending new media training weekly from myself, using Downtown WO as a prime example of converged media.
Her concept for a “Treat of the Week” Downtown WO post is something I hope we’ll see more of, bringing the downtown desserts from various places into the light of day. All photos and writing have been submitted by Jennifer McMullan.

Enjoy her first contribution:

Chocolate lovers rejoice! Anyone looking for a chocolaty fix that can rival their Grandma’s recipe has to travel no further than the doors of Coffee Exchange. Located at 266 Ouellette Avenue just off University Avenue, the cozy coffee shop offers a double fudge brownie that would make any Betty or little Debbie blush to hand you their version. Simon Griffin, an employer at the café says the brownie is one of the more popular desserts and that people come in specifically looking for it.

The café, known for their specialty coffees and daily fresh food offer not only a brownie with a creamy icing that makes the extra 10 minutes added to your run well worth it, but sell everything from cookies to cake to a different soup every day. For those not looking to add to their run, one of my favourite things about the food here is that they offer healthy choices such as multi-grain bread. Finding these options is harder than most would think, and make the Coffee Exchange a hidden treasure for those conscious of nutrition.

Ron Balla who has owned the local business for 17 years says they spend a lot of time making sure they have quality products. The effort is seen in the trendy décor of the café, which displays local artists’ work on the walls. This embracing of the community is further felt in the warm atmosphere of the café. Chantal Wentland, who has worked there for a little over a year, recently told me one of the best things about the café was the closeness of the staff and customers. Whether having a conversation, unwinding with a coffee to the background music, or reading in the corner cushioned chair, the Coffee Exchange is the caffeine lover’s bar.
